3 Foods That May Fight Breast Cancer Better Than Chemo?

For those suffering from breast cancer, the best option seems clear: Several rounds of chemotherapy to eradicate cancerous cells. Unfortunately, doing so comes at a great cost.

“The most significant disadvantage of chemotherapy is the development of treatment-related side effects,” says Rae Uddin, a contributor to LIVESTRONG. “These effects may include heart or kidney problems, lung tissue damage or nerve damage. Chemo treatment may also lead to infertility, which can affect your ability to conceive a child.”

But that’s not the only issue, according to Uddin–immediate effects, such as hair loss, vomiting, loss of appetite, and fever are almost always guaranteed symptoms, and while some drugs can mitigate these effects, they can’t eliminate them completely.

One doctor, however, argues that there is a more natural solution to beating breast cancer without chemotherapy–and it involves taking a trip to your local grocery store.

The Natural Cure for Breast Cancer?

For most healthcare professionals, using chemotherapy to eradicate breast cancer seem like the most effective treatment–so why is one doctor saying otherwise? For this doctor, it’s all about safely eradicating cancerous cells.

“Although vitamin C is “only” an antioxidant, its unique chemical structure, closely resembling glucose, allowing it to penetrate all of the water-soluble areas and tissues of the body, both inside cells and outside cells,” says Thomas E. Levy, a board-certified cardiologist and internist. “The design of nature is incredibly elegant. While vitamin C improves the health of normal cells, it increases the oxidative stress inside malignant cells.”

And while even Levy admits that chemotherapy is effective at killing cancer cells as well, he says it often comes at a cost–the death of innumerable healthy cells as well, causing serious side effects.

Vitamin C, on the other hand, only kills malignant cells, preventing these side effects from ever occurring. Getting your fill of vitamin C isn’t challenging either–simply pick up a pound of oranges at your local grocery store. The more you consume, the better your chances, according to Levy, and the cost is tens of thousands of dollars cheaper than a round of toxic chemotherapy treatments.

So what’s the best way to meet this vitamin C quota?

  • Have more stir fries with red bell peppers. You won’t believe it, but just one cup contains more than double your recommended daily allowance of vitamin C–even more than orange juice. Better yet, red bell peppers are also packed with other antioxidants that can help ward off a re-occurrence of breast cancer.
  • Snack on raw broccoli. While it doesn’t contain as much vitamin C as red bell peppers and orange juice,it still contains 51 milligrams of it per half cup–and for those who like to snack often, it’s easy to exceed this amount. A touch of yogurt or cucumber dip can also add a tasty zing to an otherwise less-than-savory treat as well.
  • Eat fruits, often. While not all fruits are packed with vitamin C, most fruits are, including strawberries, grapefruit, oranges, and kiwis. Your best bet: A handful of fruits as a mid-day snack can help keep hunger at bay while raising vitamin C levels, providing your body the best defense against cancer.
