3 Really WEIRD Causes of Breast Cancer – Tips & Tricks to Avoid Them!

By on March 29, 2016
Have you used an air freshener, handled a paper receipt, or even worn cheap mascara lately? Then watch out, say health experts: You’re probably raising your risk of breast cancer.

“Even though studies have found that women have a 12% lifetime risk of developing breast cancer, your individual risk may be higher or lower than that,” reports “Individual risk is affected by many different factors, such as family history, reproductive history, lifestyle, environment, and others.”

A lot of us are aware how a family history of the disease can affect our risk, but few know how certain lifestyle habits play into it. And that, unfortunately, may be why you’re at a higher risk of this disease.

Believe it or not, here are 3 reasons why you face a higher risk of breast cancer.

You Touch Paper Receipts

As strange as it sounds, paper receipts can increase your risk of breast cancer–and it’s all thanks to bisphenol A, or BPA. Though manufacturers plan to phase out use of this chemical, BPA is still found on paper receipts used by 95 percent of stores, shares one scientist.

“BPA is a developer used in the thermal paper,” says Erika Schreder, a staff scientist at the Washington Toxics Coalition. “It’s found in the receipts used by probably 95% of stores.”

Prolonged exposure, unfortunately, can lead to a higher risk of breast cancer. The more you handle paper receipts, the higher your risk, says Schreder. She suggests refusing receipts when possible, but if you can’t, make sure to wash your hands right away.

“Keep receipts away from young children, and wash your hands after handling,” says Schreder.

You Use Cheap Mascara

Who doesn’t love a good deal on makeup? But be careful. Recent research reports that cheap makeup products often contain a chemical called cadmium, something linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. The reason why? Cadmium interferes with certain estrogen-sensitive pathways, causing tumors to form. Prolonged exposure to this chemical means you’ll face a higher risk of breast cancer later in life.

So how do you indulge in your makeup addiction–safely?

Easy, say health experts. If possible, go for organic makeup, which are less likely to contain hormone-disrupting chemicals such as cadmium. It’s also best to avoid buying makeup from China, which has a not-so-good history with makeup safety. Although it may be cheaper, it’s not worth the potential health risk.

You Use Air Fresheners

Okay, so that smell in your bedroom just has to go. But before you spritz your favorite air freshener, watch out: It could contain cancer-causing chemicals.

So what are the culprits here?

According to researchers, it’s phthalates, a class of chemicals found to disrupt hormones and even accelerate cancer growth in certain breast cancer cells. One study even found that it caused cancer cells to multiple 3 times as fast, so it’s definitely a no go if you want to minimize your cancer risk.

The fix: If the smell is really bad, try substituting beeswax candles in lieu of air fresheners. Though it won’t cover up the scent quite as well, at least you won’t raise your risk of breast cancer in the process!
