Feeling down? This simple technique could help reduce depression symptoms in just 12 weeks.

According to research published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, people who practiced tai chi, a Chinese martial art, for 12 weeks experienced fewer signs of depression, though it did not eradicate the disease. Researchers are hopeful that it could eventually help people resistant to other forms of depression relief.

Albert Yeung, M.D., Sc.D., who authored the study, says it could be potentially useful to racial groups which are hesitant to treat their mental health professionally, such as East Asians.

“While some previous studies have suggested that tai chi may be useful in treating anxiety and depression, most have used it as a supplement to treatment for others medical conditions, rather than patients with depression,” says Yeung, a researcher assigned to Massachusetts General Hospital’s Depression Clinical and Research Program. “Finding that tai chi can be effective is particularly significant because it is culturally accepted by this group of patients who tend to avoid conventional psychiatric treatment.”

For the study, researchers recruited 50 Chinese-Americans diagnosed with mild to moderate depression who had not sought psychiatric treatment. At the time of the study, they were not current practitioners of tai chi, meditation, or any other techniques which affected a person’s mood.

Split into three groups, the first group participated in twice weekly sessions of tai chi. In the meanwhile, the second group attended sessions on how to improve mental health, whereas the third group served as the control, doing nothing at all.

During the sessions, the participants learned how to practice basic tai chi movements, then asked to practice the same movements at home three times per week. This continued for a total of 12 weeks.

After the 12 week period had elapsed, researchers measured their depression symptoms using the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. As it turned out, tai chi significantly decreased the severity of these symptoms. The other two groups did not fare as well, however.

“If these findings are confirmed in larger studies at other sites, that would indicate that tai chi could be a primary depression treatment for Chinese and Chinese American patients, who rarely take advantage of mental health services, and may also help address the shortage of mental health practitioners,” says Yeung.

While additional research is necessary to study how tai chi affects depression, the results thus far prove to be very positive.
