Easiest DIABETES Diet Hack – Must Try! Works Best for Older, Busy Adults

Want to lower your risk of type 2 diabetes? Here’s an easy trick that works for everyone.

According to new research from the University of Oxford, people who ate fresh fruit everyday were 12 percent less likely to develop diabetes compared to people who rarely or never consumed them. In addition, just consuming fresh fruit three times per week led to a 28 percent lower risk of diabetic complications, including heart disease and stroke.

The research currently appears in PLOS Medicine.

“To our knowledge, this is the first large prospective study demonstrating similar inverse associations of fruit consumption with both incident diabetes and diabetic complications,” write researchers in the journal’s online version. “These findings suggest that a higher intake of fresh fruit is potentially beneficial for primary and secondary prevention of diabetes.”

The Research

For the study, researchers studied nearly 500,000 Chinese adults who were enrolled in the China Kadoorie Biobank between 2004 and 2008. To ensure the results were representative of many lifestyles, they chose adults from several diverse areas in China.

After undergoing physical and blood measurement tests, all participants completed a questionnaire, which tracked their daily consumption of fresh fruits. Although it is common knowledge that fresh fruits and vegetables are beneficial, researchers were not sure if fresh fruits alone had a substantial impact on diabetes. As it turned out, they were wrong.

After tallying up how many fresh fruits they ate on a daily basis, and then comparing it to any reported cases of diabetes, they found that it led to significant decreases. For instance, people who ate fresh fruit daily, regardless of the actual amount, were 12 percent less likely to develop diabetes. However, that was not the case for people who rarely or never ate fresh fruit; they developed type 2 diabetes more often.

It also helped diabetics manage their disease better. Just eating fresh fruit 3 times per week led to a 17 percent decrease in mortality from any cause, for instance. It also led to a 28 percent lower risk of developing diabetes-related complications, such as heart disease, blindness, and neuropathy.

Overall, the results show that fresh fruit is a must–especially for those who want to avoid developing type 2 diabetes.

“For individuals who have already developed diabetes, restricted consumption of fresh fruit, which is common in many parts of the world, e.g., China and other Asian countries, should not be encouraged,” write researchers. “Among individuals who were free of diabetes (either previously diagnosed or newly detected) at the start of the study, daily consumption of fresh fruit was associated with a 12% lower relative risk of developing diabetes, compared to never or rarely consuming fresh fruit.”
