According to health experts, vitamin B6 helps your body optimize nearly 200 biochemical reactions in your body, which, in turn, also helps your immune system function better. Without it, your immunity is shot; and that’s good news for those pesky, disease-causing bacteria lurking in your body.

Luckily, getting your fix isn’t hard: Just add more bananas, baked potatoes, and chickpeas to your diet. For non-vegans, chicken and tuna also works as well.

3. Selenium. Found in tuna, barley, Brazil nuts, and broccoli, this nutrient is a powerhouse for your immune system, so make sure to eat up. Though it won’t prevent the common cold, research shows it affects the immune system in a more powerful way–by slowing certain responses that can lead to cancer. To reap the biggest benefits, you’re best off eating selenium-rich foods fresh, not frozen.

4. Zinc. This nutrient is important for many reasons, but for those with a weak immune system, it’s vital. Research shows consuming enough zinc helps slow your body’s immune response and calms inflammation, which can lower the risk of short-term and chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure. So eat up–your best sources for zinc are oysters, poultry, and baked beans, preferably fresh, not frozen.

5. Vitamin E. Although it’s more commonly used in skincare products, often because it’s purported to heal scars, it’s more important as a immune system booster, say scientists. Consumed daily, this vitamin also acts an antioxidant, fighting off infections that would otherwise make you sick instantly. So no argument about it–you need vitamin E, and you need it everyday.

So what are the best food sources for vitamin E? As it turns out, it’s nuts. A handful of almonds, peanuts, or even sunflower seeds can provide you with enough vitamin E to keep your immunity high, according to research.
