Having a hard time avoiding temptation? Then you’ll want to avoid this the next time you eat, say researchers.

In a new study published in Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, researchers found that saturated fat stimulated the brain’s hypothalamus, reducing its ability to control food intake. This meant eating it increased the risk of binge eating–and, consequently, obesity.

On the contrary, however, eating foods containing healthy fats, such as monounsaturated fat, had the opposite effect on hunger.

“These days, great attention is dedicated to the influence of the diet on people’s wellbeing,” say Professors Marianna Crispino and Maria Pina Mollica, who both conduct research at the University of Naples Federico II. “Although the effects of high fat diet on metabolism have been widely studied, little is known about the effects on the brain.”

Performing their study on laboratory rats, researchers split them in 3 groups, where they consumed a standard chow diet or a diet rich in lard or fish oil. During this experiment, they also monitored their body weight and food intake–if it changed, researchers could pinpoint it to a specific diet.

And that’s just what they did.

Compared to the fish oil group, the lard group increased their daily intake–and, after a brief analysis, researchers found it affected their brains too. They discovered it increased oxidative stress in the brain’s hypothalamus, which lessened its ability to regulate food intake. As a result, they ate more calories.

So if you’re dieting, calories aren’t your only concern, say researchers–the type of fat you eat also matters too.

“The difference was very clear and we were amazed to establish the impact of a fatty diet onto the brain,” says Crispino. ” Our results suggest that being more aware about the type of fat consumed with the diet may reduce the risk of obesity and prevent several metabolic diseases.”

While further research is necessary, researchers are confident about these findings. Previous research also found that saturated fat caused people to eat more calories; they were also more likely to be inactive and obese. Now this study continues to strengthen their belief that it’s just not a good choice.

“Our data confirm that chronic overnutrition leads to hypothalamic dysregulation and to the development of overnutrition-related diseases,” write researchers in the journal’s online version. “Further studies are necessary to investigate on other molecules that may mediate the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects of polyunsaturated fatty acid.”
