How to Make Your Low Carb Diet Exciting

By on September 6, 2014
Let’s face it; once you cut out the carbs (or at least cut them dramatically), your food can get a little boring. One of the most common reasons people stop low carb diets or get frustrated with them is lack of variety. Yes, low carb diets can be boring, but there are ways to make the diets more exciting — it just takes a little creativity. Also, low carb boredom sometimes stems from a misunderstanding of the diet itself. So if you find yourself bored of low carb, consider these tips for making it a little more interesting.

You Don’t Just Eat Meat

It’s a common misconception with low carb diets; assuming you can only eat meat. There’s a lot more to a low carb diet (and should be a lot more) than meat. Yes, you cannot eat sugars and starches, but that still leaves tons of foods you can eat. You still have:

• Vegetables
• Fruits
• Meats and Seafood
• Nuts
• Eggs
• Cheeses, Yogurts and Other Dairy
• Chocolate (Unsweetened of Course)
• Coconut
• Oils and Fats
• Legumes

If you’re just eating meat, you’re missing out on plenty of food groups and potentially causing a vitamin deficiency.

Remember Your Reasons for Cutting Carbs

You should only limit carbs to the amount you have to. Do not dramatically cut down your carb intake in hopes you can lose a large amount of weight in a short amount of time. You may need to consult a nutritionist or your physician to see how many carbs you should eat each day, and once you have a number, gradually reduce to that number rather than doing it too quickly. Problems can arise if you cut them all out too quickly.

Think Global

There are a lot of global cuisines that are low-carb friendly. For example, you can make your favorite fiery fajitas without the tortilla (or use a cauliflower tortilla instead). Many Chinese and Japanese dishes are just fine without the rice and noodles. Pasta can be made using zucchini instead of noodles and meatballs are low carb friendly too.

If you’re eating out, you aren’t without options either. Most restaurants have a low carb menu or dishes that can be customized to your low carb needs.

Start Getting Creative

You would be surprised how many of your favorite dishes can be transformed into a low carb option. From breads to muffins to just simple dinners, carbs are easy to cut out. If you can’t seem to spark your own creativity, scour the web looking for low carb recipe ideas or check out Pinterest for unique low carb ideas.

If you find yourself bored with low carb, take a look at what you have been eating. If you’re repeating the same meals over and over, you’ll get bored easily. Try to change it up weekly (leaving room at least one day a week to try an entirely new recipe) and you may be able to stick to your low carb diet.
