If you’ve ever experienced it yourself, you know the pain is no laughing matter. Just one wrong move–perhaps having too much caffeine or chocolate during a date or party–could send your gastric acid haywire, causing it to backwash up your esophagus and wrack your entire system with pain.

Why Acid Reflux Happens

Though some people may blame acid reflux on stress or not getting enough sleep, this isn’t simply a mind over matter situation. Instead, researchers say acid reflux occurs when your lower esophageal sphincter does not close or open properly, causing gastric acid from your stomach to seep into your esophagus.

While it can happen to anyone, its triggers are clear: Living an unhealthy lifestyle and eating the wrong foods can make acid reflux a daily occurrence.

For instance, studies show that people who are overweight, eat a diet rich in chocolate and other fatty foods, or smoke are more likely to suffer from acid reflux symptoms than those who don’t. Certain food and beverages have also been linked to increased acid reflux symptoms, such as mint, garlic, onions, alcohol, and caffeinated soft drinks.

Unfortunately, a cure for acid reflux hasn’t been found yet–although, there are treatments now that can help reduce the pain and damage.

The Natural Treatment for Acid Reflux You Must Try

If you’re a stickler for conventional treatment, then you probably won’t be satisfied with current treatments available for acid reflux. Though many treatments exists that help soothe throats and prevent frequent attacks, it can’t always prevent everything–and sometimes these drugs carry an onslaught of side effects.

If you’re open to natural treatments, however, then you may want to try the latest treatment approved by osteopaths, called licorice root.

“Licorice root can act as a soothing agent and expectorant, which could make it useful for reducing phlegm and other upper-respiratory symptoms, says the UMMC, such as sore throat and coughing,” says August McLaughlin, a certified nutritionist and health writer. “Licorice root is also used to treat ulcer symptoms, canker sores and digestive problems, such as acid reflux and indigestion.”

Taken orally, licorice root’s effects truly are remarkable: Once ingested, it helps soothe the throat and stomach in the same manner as over-the-counter acid reflux drugs, but without the harmful side effects. It may even reduce the likelihood of future attacks, due to how to soothes the stomach and helps treat symptoms of ulcers.

Be careful not to overdo it, though–taking too much licorice root can cause adverse effects, such as headaches, high blood pressure, and fatigue. This is due to glycyrrhizin, a substance found in licorice.

    I recently met a dairy farmer who told me to try buttermilk, around 4 oz., at the first sign of heartburn/reflux. He has had many folks go off their medicine entirely after just a few treatments of buttermilk. I tried it, and it worked great! It is natural buttermilk, not the store bought variety.It is a very soothing way to alleviate the burn.
