Rapid Weight Loss with The Alkaline Diet? The Weird Diet That Works

Let’s be honest: We all could stand to lose a few pounds, but family, work, and other obligations always seem to put our diet efforts at a standstill.

Yet a new diet, called the Alkaline Diet, says you can easily lose weight at home without having to count a single calorie–instead, it’s all about creating an alkaline environment inside of your body.

“The philosophy behind the alkaline diet is that western diets are too acidic, causing acidic waste to build up in the body and wreak havoc on our organs, which in turn leads to chronic disease,” says Pamela Wilson, a reporter for ABC Health & Wellbeing. “Proponents advocate that by eating 70 per cent alkaline foods and 30 per cent acidic foods, you’ll create a pH balance in your body that is optimal for health and will reduce the risk of chronic disease.”

So what can you expect to eat? According to Wilson, expect plenty of vegetables–and with that servings of fruits, grains, nuts, and legumes. There’s plenty off limits here too: Meat, eggs, dairy, bread, and even mushrooms are banned.

It sounds extreme, but proponents of the diet claim these foods increase the levels of acid inside of your body, throwing off the crucial pH body needed to increase weight loss (they claim it’s ratio of 70/30).

“Proponents of alkaline diets believe that a diet high in acid-producing foods is disrupts this balance and promotes the loss of essential minerals such as potassium, magnesium, calcium, and sodium, as the body tries to restore equilibrium,” says Cathy Wong, an alternative health guide for About.com. “This imbalance is thought to make people prone to illness.”

Should You Try This Diet?

While this diet offers its own advantages–eating less meat, dairy, and bread cuts out of a chunk of calories–not all experts agree this is a good plan. Wilson argues that its restriction of certain food groups can also cause vitamin deficiencies–such as calcium, which is abundant in dairy products.

With that are also issues of low fat content, since most foods on the “approved” list contain virtually no fat. While consuming too much fat isn’t good for your health, it’s also unhealthy to eat too little of it–it’s more likely to cause hormonal problems in women, for instance.

Wong, however, disagrees, and suggests it may be a good diet for the treatment of certain illnesses.

“Although conventional doctors do believe that increasing consumption of fruit and vegetables and reducing one’s intake of meat, salt, and refined grains is beneficial to health, most conventional doctors do not believe that an acid-producing diet is the foundation of chronic illness,” says Wong. “In conventional medicine, there is evidence, however, that alkaline diets may help prevent the formation of calcium kidney stones, osteoporosis, and age-related muscle wasting.”

Both however agree on one matter: You should talk to your doctor before trying this diet.
