Drinking this could reduce your risk of stroke, say health researchers.

According to a study led by University of Reading researchers, drinking a daily glass of whey protein reduced the risk of heart disease in adults with mild hypertension (high blood pressure), which is derived from milk. Though the effects were not studied in healthy adults, experts believe it can still have a substantial impact.

Agnes Fekete, who led the study, explains why these findings are important:

“The results of this trial are very exciting. It shows the positive impact that dairy proteins can have on blood pressure. Long-term studies show that people who drink more milk tend to be healthier, but until now, there has been little work to evaluate how dairy proteins affect blood pressure in particular.”

Carried out by the University of Reading’s Hugh Sinclair Unit of Human Nutrition, researchers fed a group of pre and mild hypertension participants a beverage containing whey protein twice daily. Prior to the study, they measured the participants’ blood pressure and cholesterol levels, markers of heart disease.

After eight weeks had elapsed, researchers ended the trial and checked their cholesterol and blood pressure markers to note any changes.

So what changed?

  • It significantly reduced blood pressure. Systolic blood pressure decreased by 3.9 mm Hg, whereas diastolic blood pressure decreased by 2.5 mm Hg.
  • Total cholesterol also decreased. They had lower cholesterol readings overall, reducing their cardiovascular disease risk. They also had lower levels of triacyglycerol, a type of fat also associated with heart disease.

Overall, the study proves that drinking whey protein is a good idea–especially if you currently have risk factors for this disease.

“One of the important impacts of this study is that whey protein may have a role, as part of a healthy diet, to reduce risk factors for cardiovascular disease, although further studies are required to confirm these results,” says Professor Julie Lovegrove, a University of Reading Director of the Hugh Sinclair Unit of Human Nutrition.
