REVEALED: The Top 3 Best Weight Loss Drinks to Fight Belly Fat

By on August 3, 2013
Struggling to lose weight? While a recent study says that those who opt for diet soda may be sabotaging their diets, researchers still maintain that choosing the right beverages–preferably those low in calories–could help you lose more weight.

“When you think of good-for-you beverages, water immediately comes to mind, but there are others worth adding to your diet,” says Tamar Schreibman of FITNESS Magazine. “Some drinks have tremendous health benefits, from relieving minor ailments like indigestion to protecting against serious ones like osteoporosis.”

So what are the best weight loss drinks to help fight the battle against the bulge? Heads up: Here are four drinks that have been proven to accelerate your fat loss:

1. Green tea. This popular beverage has been a mainstay in America since the late 90s, due to a few studies which found that it may help protect against certain diseases, such as cancer–that’s thanks to its high antioxidant content. But what’s even more remarkable is its ability to accelerate fat loss.

“Researchers say the results indicate that substances found in green tea known as catechins may trigger weight loss by stimulating the body to burn calories and decreasing body fat,” says Jennifer Warner of WebMD.com, reporting on research which found that green tea helped people lose more body fat overall over a period of three months. Those who opted for oolong tea did not lose as much body fat.

What’s even better than recent research also found that it increased energy expenditure, or the metabolism, by up to 40 percent–a great way to kick off your weight loss. Bottom line: Drink up!

2. Yerba mate. A long time favorite of residents in Brazil and Argentina, yerba mate is best known as South America’s coffee–and with that extra boost of energy comes health and weight loss benefits.

According to a 2001 study, overweight adults who took a preparation containing yerba mate three times a day for over a month lost a significant amount of weight, and participants noted that it helped them feel fuller faster while eating. A 2009 supports this research, showing that yerba mate may affect certain obesity genes, making it a potent anti-obesity treatment.

Bottom line: It’s definitely worth a try, but be careful of its caffeine content–having too much can trigger anxiety or insomnia.

3. Green coffee. The name can be a bit off-putting, but for weight loss it’s your greatest ally–Chris Kilham of Fox News explains.

“Coffee is already known to be a preventive factor against mild depression, Parkinson’s disease, and colon and rectal cancers,” says Kilham. “Now it appears that compounds in coffee also help to regulate blood glucose, reduce fat production, and enable steady weight loss. The compounds responsible for the weight-controlling effects of coffee are antioxidants known collectively as the chlorogenic acids.”

So how much can you expect to lose? According to a recent French study, people who consumed a green coffee extract lost 5.7 percent of their initial weight, whereas those on placebo only lost 2.8 percent. It may seem little, but for a 150 pound person, that’s nearly 9 pounds of weight loss–all thanks to green coffee.
